Profile

Andrei Broder is a Yahoo! Research Fellow and Vice President for Computational Advertising. Previously he was an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the CTO of the Institute for Search and Text Analysis in IBM Research.

From 1999 until early 2002 he was Vice President for Research and Chief Scientist at the AltaVista Company. Before that he has been a senior member of the research staff at Compaq's Systems Research Center in Palo Alto.

He was graduated Summa cum Laude from Technion, the Israeli Institute of Technology, and obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University under Don Knuth.

Broder is co-winner of the Best Paper award at WWW6 (for his work on duplicate elimination of web pages) and at WWW9 (for his work on mapping the web).

He has published more than seventy papers and was awarded twenty patents. He is an IEEE fellow and served as chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Mathematical Foundations of Computing.

  • Match Game - Imagine reading an ESPN blog post about pro golfer Tiger Woods and seeing a short ad for the San Francisco Zoo displayed on the same page. Or imagine the horror of reading a lurid news item about a headless body found in a suitcase—and then seeing an advertisement for a leading luggage manufacturer. Not the best way to win friends and influence sponsors.
  • Query the Obscure - Gaining a better understanding of queries is a top priority of the search industry. Why? Because knowing that the query “SD450” is about cameras while “NC4200” is about laptops can lead to improved search results, more focused advertisements, and a better user experience.
  • Yahoo! at CIKM 2008 - CIKM featured twenty-four Yahoos on the program committee, two invited Yahoo! speakers and one tutorial given by Yahoo! Research.
  • Yahoo! Shines at KDD Conference - Yahoo! was in the spotlight at the 13th annual ACM SIGKDD, the premier international conference on knowledge discovery and data mining, held August 12th-15th in San Jose.
  • Yahoo! Researchers Awarded Top Honors in Computer Science and Information Technology from ACM and IEEE - Yahoo! announced that three world-renowned scientists from Yahoo! Research have been recognized for their achievements in fields key to developing the next-generation of Internet experiences, including computer science, artificial intelligence, data mining, and algorithm engineering.
  • Yahoo! Research Leads Technical Program at WSDM 2008 Debut - Yahoo! Research led the technical program at WSDM, authoring one-fifth of the accepted papers and holding several positions on the program committees.
