Academic Relations: Student Programs

We believe that today's university thinkers are tomorrow's industry leaders and with a broad range of engaging programs on your campus you can show off your skills, get an inside look at the world’s largest global online network, and have a great time doing it.

Yahoo University Hack Days

Passionate about coding and open source technology? Ready to build that killer new mobile or Web app you’ve been thinking about? Have what it takes to compete against the best university hackers around the globe?

This is your chance to learn about exciting new open source developer tools and technologies from Yahoo Web gurus—including Douglas Crockford, the godfather of JavaScript—then build your dream app in our 24-hour Hack competition.

Each year we visit a handful of top universities, for a week of all things Open Web. During the week you’ll have the opportunity to attend tech talks and hands-on coding workshops where you’ll develop your ideas, get hack tips and learn about Web programming languages, industry tools, and technologies. You’ll also make connections with some awesome developers at Yahoo which could lead to some exclusive internship opportunities!

The week’s events culminate in the University Hack Day competition—a festival of caffeinated coding, food, games, music, fun, demos and, of course, cool prizes. Then the winners from each university will join us at the University Hack Showdown in California to battle it out for the ultimate university hacker title, more prizes, and the opportunity to demo their winning hack to VCs, web entrepreneurs, and Yahoo executives. We’ll give you access to tons of APIs and tools in the Yahoo Developer Network (check out YQL, YUI3, Metro, and SearchMonkey, just to name a few) but you’re welcome to use any open source Web tools to bring your hack to life. Remember hacking is not about perfect code, just a cool idea and working prototype. No rules. No limitations. Just show up and hack. Get a team together or hack it alone. Either way, check the Hack U™ schedule at developer.yahoo.com/hacku to find out when we’ll be on your campus.

Don’t see your school on the schedule and want Hack U™ to come to you? Email us at hacku@yahoo-inc.com.

Student Organization Support

Student organizations are a vital part of any university's community and we look to support those organizations whenever possible through a variety of sponsorships, tech talks and campus activities. If you would like to know more about our partnerships with student organizations, please contact us.

Student Awards

We believe in the next generation of big thinkers and in that aim we look to recognize and reward outstanding students.

In 2008 we initiated the Yahoo Student Teaching Awards. These awards annually recognize one undergraduate and one graduate student who demonstrate exemplary dedication, enthusiasm, technical expertise, and communication skills as teaching assistants (TAs). Selection is based on student nominations, recommendation letters, and supervising faculty reviews. Undergraduate and graduate students teaching courses and/or serving as TAs in Computer Science departments are eligible for the Yahoo Student Teaching Awards. The awards will be presented at the end of the academic year. To learn more about the Yahoo Student Teaching Awards, please contact us
