Bangalore, June 08, 2010 – Yahoo India Research & Development, in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science – Bangalore, will commence a unique Summer School dedicated exclusively to Machine Learning*. This initiative is part of Yahoo Labs’ overall mission to nurture strong academic relations for scientific leadership, new research, business collaborations and online products. The ‘Machine Learning Summer School 2010’ will be hosted from June 14 – 19, 2010 at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in partnership with the Computer Science and Automation (CSA) department. The school will cover Machine Learning and its application to information extraction and data mining for Internet search, computational advertising and recommender systems. “Yahoo works closely with academia to provide platforms for practical industry exposure to students. We believe in fostering India’s science and technology talent base. Being at the forefront of web search and advertising research, we are delighted to partner with the IISc Bangalore for this brand new concept of a summer school on Machine Learning. We are creating a common platform for mindshare exchange in this highly technical field,” said Rajeev Rastogi, VP & Head, Yahoo Labs, India. "It is a matter of great delight that our CSA Department and Yahoo Research Labs are co-organizing a summer school. This is a unique and splendid opportunity for Indian students and budding academic researchers to gain a sound exposure to the fascinating science of Machine Learning from some of the leading minds in the area. In the years to come, I foresee a rising demand from the industry for young minds rigorously trained in and passionate about Machine Learning. Initiatives such as this will go a long way in fulfilling this imminent demand and will foster a deeper and impactful collaboration between the Industry and Academia,” said Prof. Y. Narahari, IEEE Fellow and Chairman, Dept. of Computer Science & Automation, IISc. The objective of this summer school is to equip attendees with a variety of tools needed to conduct research in this area and cover the entire spectrum of Machine Learning, from theory to practical knowledge. This initiative is open both for people without previous knowledge in Machine Learning and those willing to broaden their expertise in this field. The attendees would mostly be research students, IT professionals and professors from academia. The event will also include paper presentations by national and international IT professionals and professors who are experts in the area. A major focus of Machine Learning research is to automatically learn to recognize complex patterns and make intelligent decisions based on data; the difficulty lies in the fact that the set of all possible behaviour given all possible inputs is too complex to describe generally in programming languages, so that in effect programs must automatically describe programs. Artificial intelligence is a closely related field, as also probability theory and statistics, data mining, pattern recognition, adaptive control, and theoretical computer science.
