Scott Gaffney is VP of the Personalization, Search, and Knowledge group in Yahoo Labs which is focused on driving user satisfaction and engagement across all products in the company through user understanding, content understanding, and knowledge extraction and management. His research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, and statistical pattern recognition.
Scott received his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the School of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where he worked under Professor Padhraic Smyth. While at UCI, he also received his M.S. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science as well as his B.A. in Economics.
Before joining Yahoo in August 2005, he launched a software development company which focused on web development (Zpex), and he was the CTO of an online digital music company (Loud Energy). During his undergraduate and graduate education, he worked on projects with various institutions including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, AT&T Shannon Labs, the Department of Education, and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University.
